9 Power Looks Inspired by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Speaking to Michelle Ruiz for the latest issue of Vanity Fair, Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez confessed, “It’s legitimately hard being a first-generation woman…and being working class, trying to navigate a professional environment. It continues to take me so long to try to figure out how to look put-together without having a huge designer closet.”

As the youngest congresswoman in history, who was famously working as a bartender before she was elected to the House in 2018, She has become an icon not only for her progressive initiatives like the Green New Deal, but for her style and the meaning she puts behind it. She wore gold hoop earrings and red lipstick to her 2019 swearing-in ceremony as, Ruiz notes, “a cosmetic Bat-signal to Latina culture” and a tribute to fellow Bronx native Justice Sonia Sotomayor. “Next time someone tells Bronx girls to take off their hoops,” she wrote on Twitter, “they can just say they’re dressing like a Congresswoman.”

As Ruiz notes elsewhere in her story, Ocasio-Cortez was not “groomed for politics or even corporate America,” which is part of why she is willing, unlike many female politicians, to talk about her appearance.

Inspired by AOC, from those iconic gold hoops to the bright colours that make her stand out in any room, here are nine of her most powerful looks and how to recreate them.

Did You Know? Young girls and ladies are taking inspiration from AOC styling and make-up!

9 POWER LOOKS:

Victoria, Victoria Beckham Blazer, J. Crew Tank, and Mejuri Necklace

In July, Ocasio-Cortez was as bold as the red blazer she wore when she spoke out against the sexist comments Ted Yoho made about her on the Capitol steps. Afterwards, her colleague Ayanna Pressley told her, “You know how I know you showed up to do business? Because you matched your lip with your suit.”

Banana Republic Blazer, AG Jeans, Dorothee Schumacher Tank, Telfar Shopping Bag, and AP Bands Face Mask

Ocasio-Cortez supported Black LGBTQ+ designer Telfar Clemens when she carried the highly sought-after Telfar bag to the Capitol in August.

Everlane Shirt, Theory Skirt, and Stuart Weitzman Pump

At SXSW in 2019, she opted for a straightforward business casual look—a great white blouse, brown pencil skirt, and low heel.

Theory Blazer and Pants, Mansur Gavriel Flats, and Warby Parker Glasses

While unveiling her Green New Deal resolution in early 2019, Ocasio-Cortez wore a suit in symbolic hunter green. If green is the new color of change, we could all use a little more green in our life, and this Theory suit will do the trick.

Kobi Halperin Blazer, National Archives Pin, and Jennifer Fisher Earrings

Ocasio-Cortez wore all white to the State of the Union in 2019 in honor of women’s suffragists, adding a chic cape-jacket to complete the look.

Lauren by Ralph Lauren Dress

Ocasio-Cortez couldn’t be missed in her sapphire dress as she called for the impeachment of Justice Brett Kavanaugh during a speech.

Rebecca Taylor Jacket and Skirt and Phlemuns Mask

“Times have been intense lately. I’ve been cheering myself up by wearing colours that make me happy,” Ocasio-Cortez wrote on Instagram recently. Get your own AOC-inspired pink suit set, and complete the look with a pink Phlemuns mask for style and safety.
